12 - Becoming In The Now

You knew what you should do.

Tell the truth.
Close the deal.
Put the phone down and listen.

Maybe you did it. Maybe you let the moment pass.

Either way, a second later, the choice was already behind you.

Before the moment, several things were possible.
In the moment, one became real—a Result—what you did or failed to do.
Then that moment moved into the past.

In Results Make Love Real, we learned that wanting and knowing what is best are not enough.

Getting Results carries wisdom and love into action and makes what is best real.

The outcome happens.
Trust grows or weakens.
And you change through whatever you practiced.

Every experience, thought, and action changes you.
You become what you experience, think, and do.

To understand how that happens, start with something you have already done.

As a toddler, you had the potential to walk.

Through millions of steps and tens of thousands of falls, you converted your potential to walk into the actual ability to walk and became a walker.

Each attempt converted some of your potential into a Result—a successful step or a fall.

With each attempt, you became a better walker and improved your ability to succeed on the next one.

That's how Becoming works.

It's the same mechanism for everything in life.

One experience, thought, or action changes you a little.
What you repeatedly experience, think, and do changes you a lot.

Potential courage becomes real when you think and act courageously.
Potential honesty becomes real when you think and act honestly.
Potential mental toughness becomes real when you keep going under pressure.

The Now Is Where Life Becomes Real

Becoming is the continuous process of converting potential into reality.

Becoming changes what could be (potential), into what is (reality), and then instantly into what happened (the past).

Becoming happens in the moment—in the ever-present, never-ending Now.

The Now is the point where potential becomes reality. A moment later, that reality is part of the past.

Then the next possibility arrives.

The Now is where your life becomes real.

This isn't only true for you.

Life Is Always Becoming

This is not only a technique for building habits. It reflects the basic movement of life itself.

Living things begin with potential and develop through stages.

An acorn becomes a seedling, a sapling, and an oak.
A butterfly egg becomes a caterpillar, a chrysalis, and a butterfly.
A human being develops from conception through childhood and adulthood.

From the beginning of life until its end, living things never stop changing and Becoming.

Reality is not standing still. Neither are you.

Everything happens in the Now.

You Can't Change the Past

Becoming is a one-way process. Once something has become real, it immediately moves into the past, and cannot be un-become or un-done.

The past is fixed.

You cannot erase cruel words or recover a missed opportunity.

But the good stays too.

You cannot erase the truth you told when it cost you.
The promise you kept.
The courage you practiced.
The love you made real.

Those became part of your story too.

What happened cannot be undone.

Who you are Becoming is not finished.

Choose Who You Become

Because you are self-aware, you can reflect on your potential and choose intentionally what you practice.

Use a simple process:

Plan

Choose a task, habit, or skill you want to develop.

A plan can be as simple as ten seconds of thinking before you begin, or as detailed as a written process.

Decide:

  • What Result am I trying to make real?
  • What will I do?
  • When will I do it?

Execute

When the moment arrives, execute the plan intensely in the Now.

That means going all-in on the present repetition.

Sometimes that requires energy, speed, and effort.
Sometimes it requires patience, attention, or absolute quiet.

Do this rep fully before moving to the next one.

Reflect

Afterward, ask:

  1. How well did I plan and execute?
(What happened, what worked, and what could be better?)
  2. What Results did I get?
(What happened in the outcome, my Becoming, and trust—and why?)
  3. What did I learn?
(About the task, the process, and myself? What will I change next time?)

Remember that you get good at Executing Intensely in the Now by getting reps Executing Intensely in the Now.

One Rep in the Now

Choose one task you need to complete today.

It might be paying the bills, organizing rides for the kids, having an awkward conversation, or completing the sales call sheet.

Make a simple plan.

When the time comes, go all-in on executing that plan in the Now.

Then reflect:

How well did I plan and execute?
What Results did I get?
What did I learn?

One rep complete.

Summary

Becoming is the continuous process of converting potential into reality.

Potential becomes reality. Then it becomes part of the past.

This happens continuously in the Now.

You cannot change the past. But you can choose the direction of your Becoming through what you think and do now.

Plan.
Execute intensely in the Now.
Reflect.
Then bring what you learned into the next rep.

Wisdom helps you see what is best.
Love drives you to act.
Results make it real in the Now.

That closes the formation arc—from learning to trust yourself to understanding how Becoming actually happens.

In the next piece, we carry all of it into the place many of us spend most of our waking hours: work. The people you work with are people.

Seek Wisdom. Practice Love. Get Results.

Make what is best real.
